Workplace Inspections & Audits

By Ryan Graham, WHS Officer, 19 October 2022

Why are workplace inspections important?

Conducting regular workplace inspections and audits is a crucial part of maintaining a safe and healthy workplace. These activities help to identify potential hazards and safety issues, which can then be addressed before they cause accidents or injuries.

How often should you conduct a workplace inspection?

Workplace inspections should be conducted on a regular basis, at least once per month. They should be conducted by a trained individual, who is familiar with the workplace and its hazards. The inspection should cover all areas of the workplace, including work areas, storage areas, and common areas.

How to conduct a workplace inspection:

When conducting an inspection, employers should look for potential hazards, such as trip hazards, electrical hazards, and chemical hazards. They should also look for signs of unsafe work practices, such as improper lifting techniques or lack of personal protective equipment.

After the inspection is complete, employers should review the findings with their employees. They should discuss any hazards that were found, and develop a plan to address them. Employees should be encouraged to report any hazards they observe in the workplace, so that they can be addressed quickly.

What is the difference between an inspection and an audit?

Workplace audits are similar to inspections, but they are conducted on a more detailed level. Audits are typically conducted by an outside party, such as a safety consultant or regulatory agency. During an audit, employers should expect to provide documentation, such as employee training records and safety plans.

Audits can be used to verify that workplace safety programs are effective, and to identify any areas that need improvement. They can also be used to determine whether employers are complying with safety regulations.

Workplace inspections and audits are important tools that employers can use to create a safe and healthy workplace. By conducting these activities on a regular basis, employers can identify potential hazards and safety issues, and take steps to address them.
