10 Tips for Working Alongside Contractors

By Ryan Graham, WHS Officer, 23 October 2022

1. Define the Scope of Work

Before work begins, it is important to take the time to sit down with your contractor and clearly define the scope of work. This will help ensure that everyone is on the same page from the start and will avoid any misunderstandings down the line.

2. Set Clear Expectations

In addition to defining the scope of work, it is also important to set clear expectations with your contractor. This means communicating things like deadlines, budget, and desired outcome. By setting clear expectations from the start, you can help avoid any issues later on.

3. Create a Schedule

Once the scope of work and expectations have been set, it is time to create a schedule. This will help ensure that the project stays on track and that everyone knows what needs to be done and when.

4. Keep an Open Line of Communication

Throughout the duration of the project, it is important to keep an open line of communication with your contractor and your regular employees. This way, if anything comes up, you can address it right away.

5. Keep an Eye on the Workload

When you have both full-time employees and contractors working on the same project, it is important to keep an eye on the workload. You want to make sure that everyone is pulling their own weight and that no one is getting overloaded.

6. Make Sure Everyone is on the Same Page

Throughout the project, it is important to keep everyone on the same page. This means regular check-ins and updates with both your employees and contractors.

7. Assign Responsibility

To avoid any confusion, it is important to assign responsibility for different tasks and parts of the project. This way, everyone knows who is responsible for what and there is no overlap in work.

8. Be flexible:

There will inevitably be some bumps in the road when working with contractors. It is important to be flexible and willing to adjust the plan as needed. By being flexible, you can help keep the project on track.

9. Be Patient

Working with contractors can often be a trying and patience-testing experience. However, it is important to remain patient throughout the process. By staying calm and collected, you can help avoid any issues.

10. Have a Backup Plan

No matter how well you plan, there is always a chance that something will go wrong. That is why it is important to have a backup plan in place. This way, if something does happen, you can quickly get back on track.

Working with contractors can be a great way to get work done quickly and efficiently. However, it is important to keep these tips in mind when working alongside them.
