Safe Operation of Trucks

By Ryan Graham, WHS Officer, 12 August 2022

If you are a truck driver, it is important to know how to safely operate your vehicle. Truck accidents can cause serious injuries and even death, so it is crucial that you take precautions to avoid them.

Tips for safe operation of trucks:

Be aware of your surroundings:

  • Use your mirrors to check for traffic behind you, and use your turn signals to let other drivers know what you are doing.
  • If you are driving in heavy traffic, be extra cautious and watch for other vehicles.
  • In bad weather conditions, slow down and allow extra space between you and other vehicles.
  • Be sure to use your headlights and taillights when visibility is low.
  • Watch out for potholes, bumps, and other obstacles that could damage your truck or cause an accident.

Be cautious at all times:

  • Always obey the speed limit and other posted traffic signs.
  • Get plenty of rest before driving, and take breaks often to stay alert.
  • Never drink alcohol or use drugs before driving.
  • Avoid distractions while driving, such as using your phone or talking to passengers.
  • Stay focused on the road and be aware of other vehicles around you.
  • Be sure to check the blind spots before changing lanes or making a turn.

Make sure you know what you’re doing before operating a truck:

  • Make sure you know how to operate the truck you will be driving before getting behind the wheel.
  • Familiarise yourself with the controls and features of the truck, such as the turning radius, the height of the cab, and the weight limit.
  • Keep your truck well-maintained to avoid mechanical problems.

What to do in the event of an incident:

  • In the event of an accident, always stay calm and call for help immediately.
  • Do not try to move your vehicle unless it is safe to do so.
  • If you are able, turn on your hazard lights to warn other drivers of the accident.
  • Once help arrives, be sure to give a clear and accurate account of what happened.

Remember, safety is always the top priority when operating a truck. If you have any questions about truck safety, be sure to consult with an experienced truck driver or your company’s safety department.
