How To Safely Operate Skid Steers

By Ryan Graham, WHS Officer, 12 August 2022

Skid steers are compact and easy to operate, and they can handle a wide variety of tasks. However, it is important to take safety precautions when operating this type of equipment. In this blog post, we will discuss some tips to keep in mind when operating a skid steer.

What is a skid steer used for?

A skid steer is a type of construction equipment that is typically used for excavating, grading, and levelling. It consists of a small frame with four wheels that are powered by hydraulics. The skid steer is operated by a joystick or set of levers that control the direction and speed of the machine. Skid steers are versatile and can be equipped with a variety of attachments, such as buckets, augers, and forks.

Common skid steer injuries:

  • Cuts and scrapes from contact with the machine
  • Crushing injuries from being pinned between the skid steer and another object
  • Amputations from coming into contact with the blades or other moving parts of the machine

Skid steers are not dangerous if you operate them safely and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. However, as with any type of machinery, there is always a risk of injury if you do not use caution.

Safety tips for operating a skid steer:

  • Before operating a skid steer, it is important to read the operator’s manual. This will help you to understand the capabilities and limitations of the machine. You should also be familiar with the controls before operating it.
  • If you are new to operating a skid steer, it is best to practice in a safe area before using the machine in a real work environment.
  • When operating a skid steer, always wear proper safety gear, including a helmet, gloves, and eye protection.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and do not operate the skid steer near power lines or other potential hazards. Always use caution when operating the machine on slopes or uneven terrain.
  • Always make sure the area around the skid steer is clear of debris and people.
  • Never stand on the platform of the skid steer while it is in operation because you could fall and be seriously injured.

By following these safety tips, you can help prevent accidents and injury while operating a skid steer. Be sure to always put safety first when working with this type of machinery.
