How To Prevent Slips, Trips and Falls In The Workplace

By Ryan Graham, WHS Officer, 25 October 2022

Common injuries from slips, trips and falls:

Slips, trips and falls often result in minor injuries like bruises, cuts and scrapes. However, more serious injuries can also occur, such as fractures, concussions and spinal cord injuries. Slips, trips and falls can even lead to death in some cases.

How to prevent slips, trips and falls in the workplace:

  • Wear proper footwear: Shoes with good traction will help you keep your footing on slippery surfaces. Avoid wearing shoes with smooth soles, such as high heels or dress shoes.
  • Keep your work area clean and free of hazards. Make sure that there is no water or oil on the floor. If you spill something, clean it up immediately. Also, be sure to remove any tripping hazards from your work area.
  • When walking on slippery surfaces, take your time and use caution. Walk slowly and carefully, and try to avoid sudden movements.
  • If you need to walk on a slippery surface, hold onto something stable for support.

What to do if you have a slip, trip or fall at work:

  • First, try to stay calm. This will help you assess the situation and any injuries that you may have sustained.
  • Next, get up slowly and carefully. If you can’t get up on your own, call for help.
  • Finally, seek medical attention and make sure you report the incident, even if it seems minor.

What to do if you see someone slip, trip or fall at work:

  • First, check to see if the person is injured.
  • If they are not injured, help them get up.
  • If they are injured, call for medical assistance immediately.
  • Make sure the incident is reported, even if it does not seem serious. This will help prevent more slips from occurring in the same way.

Slips, trips and falls are a common occurrence in the workplace but they can be prevented by following these simple precautions.
