Forklift Injuries & How To Prevent Them

By Ryan Graham, WHS Officer, 31 May 2022

Common forklift injuries include:

  • Cuts and bruises
  • Broken bones
  • Internal injuries
  • Fatal injuries

How to Prevent Forklift Injuries:

  • Proper training: All forklift operators must receive proper training and hold the correct license before operating a forklift. This training should cover topics such as how to properly operate the forklift, how to safely load and unload materials, and what to do if an accident does occur. Click here for more information on licenses.
  • Forklifts should be regularly inspected and maintained by qualified personnel. This will help to ensure that they are in good working condition and that there are no potential hazards.
  • Wear proper safety equipment, such as gloves, safety glasses, and hard hats.
  • Keep a safe distance from moving forklifts, and never walk or stand in front of them.
  • Never attempt to carry too much weight or drive the forklift fast
  • Never move from your seat or attempt to reach something off a shelf without coming to a complete stop and pulling the handbrake

When turning a forklift around a corner :

  • Slow down to prevent the forklift from tipping over or hitting someone.
  • Keep your load balanced to prevent the forklift from tipping over.
  • Use your horn to warn others of your presence.

If your load begins to fall off the forklift :

  • Do not try to catch it
  • Get out of the way and warn others
  • Report it to ensure that the problem is investigated and that corrective action is taken.

What to do if you see someone using a forklift incorrectly:

  • Report it to a supervisor immediately. This will help to ensure that the problem is corrected before an accident occurs.
  • Contact your health and safety officer to file a complaint. This will help to ensure that the problem is investigated and that corrective action is taken.

What to do if you or a co-worker is injured by a forklift:

  • Seek medical attention as soon as possible. Even if your injuries seem minor, they could be more serious than they appear.
  • Report the accident to ensure that the accident is investigated and that any potential hazards are corrected.

Forklifts are powerful machines that can be dangerous if not used properly. By following the proper safety procedures, you can help to keep yourself and your coworkers safe.
