Eye Damage from Sunlight Exposure: Protecting Your Eyes at Work

By Ryan Graham, WHS Officer, 1 June 2022

If you work outside, or in an environment where there is a lot of sunlight exposure, it’s important to take steps to protect your eyes. Eye damage from the sun can lead to vision problems down the road, so it’s crucial to take action now. In this blog post, we will discuss some tips for protecting your eyes at work.

Why does the sun damage eyes?

The sun emits ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is harmful to the eyes. UV radiation can cause a number of eye problems, including:

  • Cataracts: A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens, which leads to blurry vision.
  • Macular degeneration: Macular degeneration is an age-related condition that causes vision loss in the center of the field of vision.
  • Pterygium: A pterygium is a growth on the surface of the eye. Pterygia can cause redness and irritation, and can eventually lead to scarring and vision problems.

Symptoms of eye damage from sunlight exposure:

There are a number of symptoms that can indicate you have suffered eye damage from the sun. These include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Floaters or spots in your field of vision
  • Frequent changes in eyeglass prescription
  • Redness or irritation in the eyes
  • Sensitivity to light

If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to see an eye doctor right away. Only a professional can properly diagnose and treat sun-related eye damage.

How to Prevent sunlight damage to the eye:

  • Wear sunglasses: Sunglasses that block out 99% or 100% of UV rays can help protect your eyes from sun damage.
  • Wear a hat: A wide-brimmed hat will shade your face and eyes from the sun.
  • Stay in the shade: When possible, stay in the shade to avoid direct sunlight exposure.
  • Wear UV-blocking contact lenses: If you wear contact lenses, talk to your eye doctor about lenses that offer UV protection.
  • Take breaks: If you are outside for an extended period of time, take breaks indoors or in the shade to give your eyes a rest from the sun.

By following these tips, you can help protect your eyes from sun damage. Remember, eye damage from the sun is cumulative, so it’s important to take steps to protect your vision now. For more information on eye health and safety, contact your local eye doctor.
