Housekeeping in the Construction Industry

By Ryan Graham, WHS Officer, 28 July 2022

If you are in the construction industry, then you know that keeping your work site clean is essential. Not only is it necessary for safety reasons, but it also helps to keep productivity high. In this blog post, we will discuss some of the most important aspects of housekeeping in the construction industry.

Why is housekeeping important in the construction industry?

Keeping your worksite clean can help improve productivity. A study by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that workers in a tidy environment were 12% more productive than those in a cluttered one. A big part of this is that you will be able to easily find and access everything you need to use.

An even more important reason to keep your worksite clean is to improve safety, and in particular, to prevent slip, trip, and fall hazards.

Tips for preventing slips, trips and falls:

  • Keep your work area clean and free of clutter.
  • Use caution when wet mopping or using cleaning chemicals.
  • Make sure cords and wires are properly secured and out of the way.
  • Never leave tools or equipment lying around.
  • Use proper signage to warn people of potential hazards.

Waste management:

Construction sites generate a lot of waste, so it is important to have a plan for how you are going to dispose of it. There are many options for waste disposal, so you will need to find the one that works best for your project.

You can either hire a waste management company to take care of it for you, or you can do it yourself. If you decide to do it yourself, make sure that you follow all the safety regulations and dispose of the waste properly.

Dust control:

Dust is one of the most common hazards on construction sites, so it is important to take measures to control it. Dust is dangerous because it can cause respiratory problems as well as irritate the skin and eyes.

There are many ways to control dust, such as using water hoses and air filters. If you are working with hazardous materials, make sure that you take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and those around you.

Completing a project:

Once a project is completed, it is important to do a final walkthrough to make sure that the area is clean and free of hazards. This includes picking up any debris, removing any leftover construction materials, and cleaning up any areas that were affected by the project.

Tips for housekeeping in the construction industry:

  • Encourage workers to clean up as they go.
  • Set up a regular cleaning schedule.
  • Make sure there are enough trash cans and recycling bins.
  • Enforce a no littering policy.

Housekeeping is an important part of the construction industry, so make sure that you take it seriously. Your workers will appreciate a clean and safe work environment, and it will help to improve productivity.
