Ladder Safety: How to Stay Safe When Working with Ladders

By Ryan Graham, WHS Officer, 28 July 2022

In this blog post, we will discuss ladder safety and how to stay safe when working with ladders. We will cover topics such as choosing the right ladder for the job, proper ladder usage, and how to avoid common accidents.

Why is ladder safety important?

Ladder safety is important because falls from ladders are a leading cause of injuries and fatalities on construction sites. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), more than 24,000 people were injured in ladder-related accidents in 2014. Of those injuries, nearly half required time off from work to recover.

Common ladder injuries:

  • Falls
  • Trips and slips
  • Being hit by a falling object
  • Collapsing ladder
  • Electrocution

Choosing the right ladder:

You want to make sure that you select a ladder that is tall enough for the task at hand, but not too tall. If you are unsure of which ladder to use, ask a supervisor or another experienced individual for help.

Following ladder instructions:

Using a ladder properly is also crucial for safety. Make sure that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use. When climbing a ladder, always face the rungs and grab them with both hands. Keep your body close to the ladder as you climb, and don’t try to carry anything up with you.

Using planks and trestles:

Planks and trestles are often used in conjunction with ladders, and they can pose a serious safety risk if they are not used properly. When using a plank or trestle, always make sure that it is placed securely on the ground before climbing onto it. Also, be sure to check the condition of the plank or trestle before use. If it appears to be damaged in any way, do not use it and replace it with a new one.

Ladder safety tips:

  • Never reach more than one rung above the top of the ladder.
  • Always face the ladder while climbing, and use both hands to grab the Rungs.
  • Keep your body close to the ladder as you climb.
  • Avoid carrying anything up with you that could cause you to lose your balance.
  • If you feel like you are going to fall, let go of the ladder and grab onto something else to break your fall.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and make sure that there is nothing in the way that could trip you or cause you to fall off the ladder.
  • Never try to jump off of a ladder, as this can lead to serious injuries.

If you take these precautions, you will be able to avoid accidents and stay safe while working with ladders.
