8 Safety Tips For New Work Equipment

By Ryan Graham, WHS Officer, 19 October 2022

1. Read the manual:

Before you do anything else, take the time to read the manual for your new work equipment. The manual will contain important information on how to use the equipment safely. If you have any questions, be sure to ask your supervisor or another experienced worker before beginning.

2. Inspect the equipment:

Once you are familiar with how the equipment works, take a few minutes to inspect it before using it. Look for any damage or wear and tear that could cause problems. If you see anything that could be a potential hazard, do not use the equipment and report the problem to your supervisor.

3. Follow the safety instructions:

When you use the equipment, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and any relevant SWMS. These instructions are designed to help you use the equipment safely and avoid accidents.

4. Use the proper safety gear:

When you use work equipment, be sure to wear the proper safety gear. This may include gloves, goggles, ear protection, and more. Depending on the type of equipment you are using, different safety gear may be required. Also be sure you are dressed appropriately and not wearing loose clothing or jewellery that can be caught in machinery. Be sure that long hair is pulled back for the same reason.

5. Be aware of your surroundings:

When you use work equipment, it is important to be aware of your surroundings. This includes other workers, obstacles, and potential hazards. If you are not paying attention, you could accidentally injure yourself or someone else.

6. Keep your hands and fingers clear:

When you use work equipment, be sure to keep your hands and fingers clear of moving parts. If you get your hand or finger caught in the equipment, you could be seriously injured.

7. Do not use equipment that is not meant for you:

Some work equipment is only meant for certain people to use. If you are not authorised to use the equipment, do not use it. Using equipment that you are not supposed to can be very dangerous.

8. Do not work alone:

If possible, do not work alone when using work equipment. If something goes wrong, someone else will be there to help you.

Following these tips will help you use new work equipment safely. Remember, safety is always the top priority when using work equipment.
