Chainsaw safety tips

By Ryan Graham, WHS Officer, 10 January 2024

When it comes to using a chainsaw, safety should always be your top priority. In this blog post we’ll share some of our favorite chainsaw safety tips that will keep you from making rookie mistakes during each stage of operation.

1. Read and understand the manufacturer’s instruction manual before using your chainsaw

Before you even think about using your chainsaw, it’s absolutely crucial that you take the time to read and fully understand the manufacturer’s instruction manual. While it may seem like an unnecessary step, neglecting to do so could not only put you in danger, but could also prove detrimental to the life and overall performance of your tool.

The manual contains important information about how to properly use and maintain your chainsaw, as well as safety tips and guidelines to ensure that you’re operating it in a way that is both effective and safe.

2. Check that your chainsaw is in good condition and adjust the chain before use

Before firing up your trusty chainsaw, it’s important to ensure it’s in top-notch condition. Take a close look at the chain and check for any signs of dullness, wear and tear, or damage.

Using a dull or damaged chainsaw can be incredibly dangerous as it increases the risk of kick-back, injuries, or malfunction. When a chainsaw is dull, it has to work harder to cut through wood and branches. This generates extra force and friction which causes the saw to vibrate more violently than usual. As a result, the saw can kick-back, become stuck, or jump out of the user’s hands. This can lead to serious injury and even death in some cases.

Additionally, using a dull saw causes fatigue much more quickly as it takes extra effort to make cuts. Ensuring your saw is in good condition and properly adjusted gives you peace of mind and allows you to focus on tackling whatever cutting job awaits you.

3. PPE and clothing for safe chainsaw use

When it comes to protecting yourself on the job, there are few things more important than proper clothing. Depending on your profession, you may be required to wear everything from helmets to gloves to face shields. However, no matter what your job entails, one thing is certain: if you’re working in an environment where there is risk of injury, you should always dress appropriately with protective clothing. This may mean investing in a pair of safety glasses or steel-toed shoes, as well as ear plugs or other forms of hearing protection. It also means making sure you don’t have any loose clothing or jewellery that could get caught up in moving parts.

4. Ensure you have a good grip on the chainsaw with both hands when operating it

One of the most important safety measures to remember is to have a good grip on the chainsaw with both hands. This may seem like an obvious tip, but it can be easy to get careless when you’re deep in the throes of cutting down a tree or chopping logs for firewood.

5. Do not use a chainsaw if you are tired or under the influence of drugs or alcohol

Being tired or under the influence of drugs and alcohol can greatly increase the risk of injury or even fatal accidents. It is important to be alert and focused when working with a chainsaw to avoid any mishaps.

6. Take regular breaks when using a chainsaw and ensure there is no fatigue setting in

When you’re using a chainsaw, it’s important to stay alert and focused on the task at hand. Fatigue can set in quickly, and this can lead to accidents or injuries. By taking regular breaks, you’re allowing yourself to rest and recharge before continuing with your work.

Following these precautionary measures can ensure that you have an enjoyable experience with your chainsaw without incident. After all, taking the extra time to take care of something so potentially dangerous is worth it in comparison to having a serious incident occur due to negligence or ignorance.
