Spiders in the Workplace

By Ryan Graham, WHS Officer, 20 October 2022

There are many species of spiders in Queensland, and some of them can be found in the workplace. The most common type of spider is the house spider, which is not harmful to humans. However, other types of spiders, such as the brown recluse spider and the black widow spider, can be dangerous. If you see a spider in your workplace, it is important to identify it before taking any action. If a spider is dangerous, it will usually be dark in colour with markings on its body.

Preventing Spiders from Entering Your Workplace

  • Keep the exterior of your building free of spider webs. Inspect the perimeter of your building regularly and remove any webs you find.
  • Seal any cracks or holes in the exterior of your building. Spiders can enter through very small openings, so it is important to seal any that you find.
  • Keep your workplace clean and free of clutter. Spiders like to hide in dark, cluttered areas. By keeping your workplace clean and tidy, you will make it less attractive to spiders.

What to do if you see a spider at work:

  • If you see a spider in your workplace, there is no need to panic. Most spiders are not harmful to humans.
  • If you are unsure of the type of spider, it is best to contact a pest control professional for assistance.
  • Pest control professionals will be able to identify the spider and determine if it is dangerous.

What to do if you are bitten by a spider:

  • If you are bitten by a spider, it is important to remain calm.
  • Clean the wound with soap and water.
  • Apply a cold compress to the area to reduce swelling.
  • If the bite is painful or causes swelling, redness, or itching, seek medical attention.

By following these tips, you can prevent spiders from entering your workplace and keep yourself safe from their bites. If you do encounter a spider, do not hesitate to contact a pest control professional for assistance.
