Common injuries from hand tools:

14 Hand Tool Safety Tips to Keep You Safe:

  1. Always wear gloves when using hand tools. This will help protect your hands from cuts, scrapes, and other injuries.
  2. Inspect your tools before each use. Make sure that they are in good condition and that the blades are sharp. Worn or damaged tools can increase the chances of an accident.
  3. Be sure to keep your work area clean and free of clutter. A cluttered work area can increase the chances of an accident.
  4. Make sure that you are using the correct tool for the job at hand. Using the wrong tool can lead to accidents.
  5. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using hand tools.
  6. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing when using hand tools. Loose clothing can get caught in moving parts and lead to accidents.
  7. Be aware of your surroundings when using hand tools. Make sure that there are no people nearby who could be injured.
  8. Don’t put sharp tools in your pockets: If you need to carry a sharp object, make sure you keep it in a safe place where it can’t fall out and injure you or someone else, like a toolbox.
  9. After using a tool, clean it and return it to its proper storage place: Leaving a tool out where it can be stepped on or tripped over is an accident waiting to happen.
  10. Be sure to wipe your hands clean: Oily hands can cause slips and falls, as well as increase the chances of an accident.
  11. Protect your eyes: When using any type of power tool, be sure to wear safety goggles or a face shield to protect your eyes from flying debris.
  12. Never use hand tools while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Doing so can increase the chances of an accident.
  13. If you are not comfortable using a particular hand tool, don’t use it. Ask for help from someone who is more experienced.
  14. Always keep your mind on what you are doing when using hand tools. Distractions can lead to accidents.

What to do in the event of an injury:

If you suffer an injury while using hand tools, seek medical attention immediately. If the injury is severe, call 000 or go straight to the emergency room. Be sure to report any injuries to a supervisor.

Injuries from hand tools can be serious and even life-threatening but by following these tips, you can use hand tools safely.
